Working out with a partner could motivate you in a number of different ways and we have seen these benefits right here at Holmer Park Health Club & Spa. We always encourage our members to talk to the gym team to find a workout or class that may suit them – because we are a friendly club! Plus you can choose from a wide range of classes a week.
In order to challenge and encourage you, as well as making training more fun, why not try work out with a partner? There are additional health benefits too.
Easier to try new things
It’s far less intimidating trying new things when you’re not on your own. You could feel more confident trying new classes, exercise equipment, hit the free weights or try a yoga class. There are countless classes to try at Holmer Park Health Club & Spa – from Spin and Bodypump to yoga and Pilates – all that little bit more welcoming when you go with someone you know.
You are less likely to miss sessions
We all know how it feels if you are tired or if you had a long day at work – often heading to the gym can seem less inviting. You probably feel like cancelling your gym session altogether. But doing this even once means you can easily get into the habit of avoidance. If someone is waiting for you to work out with, you’ll be far less likely to cancel – and will get more out of it!
Introduce variety into your workouts
If you work out with someone, chances are they have different skills and exercise knowledge to you. This can benefit you by introducing you to new exercises. It introduces different ways of being active, new workouts, and helps you maintain the correct form. One of the main components of enjoying a workout is variety, and a workout partner can certainly help there.
A little competition is great
Competition cannot only be healthy but also will help us train harder. Training with a friend who is fitter than you produces something known as the Köhler Effect – which means it isn’t our nature to want to be ‘the weakest one’. This means you will push yourself harder while exercising. Studies at the department of Kinesiology at Kansas State University found that this might push someone upwards of 160% to 200% harder… just by training as a duo or more.
What if you have no one to train with?
Don’t worry if you don’t have anyone to work out with. There could be lots of reasons for that – maybe you are new to Herefordshire or work to a different schedule than your friends or family. Our fitness instructors are here to help. If you would like a programme tailored to you, they can programme Holmer Park’s state-of-the-art key system on our machines that will set specific goals and will even monitor your progress for you! Or give a personal training session a go, when we can provide you with many of the benefits as we have mentioned in this blog.
