2016 has seen the skin care industry make huge strides forward in technology and ingredients. Some of these are taking the industry by storm and will be appearing in products on beauty counters this year.
There are always fads that come and go, of course. We’ve gathered details on the hottest skin care trends so you can decide for yourself what’s here to stay or will soon be forgotten:
The clue is in the name. Boosters are ultra-concentrated, fluid formulas that can be mixed with your current products or serums to boost their benefits and effectiveness. Depending on the formula, this could mean anti-ageing or anti-acne; some boosters increase hydration while others even out skin tone. The most potent of them contain anti-ageing oxidants or cell-communicating ingredients to reduce wrinkles and other sings of ageing. They open the channels into the deeper layers of the skin so the rest of the products you use will have an even greater effect on the skin. Diagnosis? It’s sure to be popular among the super-keen skin care enthusiasts (like us!).
We’re now seeing more and more makeup that actually treats the skin as well as working purely aesthetically. You can now buy foundations, tinted moisturisers, BB creams and concealers that are formulated with anti-ageing antioxidants, dark spot faders and skin repairing nutrients. We’re surprised nobody thought of this one sooner – who doesn’t want their makeup to double up as skin care?!
SPF in foundations and moisturisers have been on the market for a while, but now you can find sun-blockers in other areas of makeup such as lip gloss and eye shadow. We’re glad beauty companies are getting onboard with this trend – lips and eyes are often the most susceptible to sun damage.
Fancy science name, yes, but niacinamide is the new kid on the block. A derivative of Vitamin B3, research is showing that this chemical has the ability to fight acne, ageing, water loss and discolouration. It has been shown to increase ceramide and fatty acid levels within the skin to prevent dryness and to stimulate micro-circulation within the dermis. Pretty big news if it works! Hopefully we’ll be seeing niacinamide in our skin care products soon and can judge for ourselves.
The challenge with products for oily/problem skin has always been to find ingredients that are light and non-greasy. Now we are seeing the emergence of ‘light as water’ and weightless texture in cosmetics as an answer to that challenge. Anti-ageing formulae can now be incorporated into any skin care regime as they are formulated to be less bulky and lighter in consistency allowing them to blend cohesively with most products. A Godsend for those with oily skin – you’ve been waiting for this for a long time!
It’s well known the benefits Omega fatty acids have in our diet, but they are becoming increasingly popular in skin care too. Fatty acids help supplement the skin’s intercellular matrix and protect the body against oxidative damage – which is a scientific term for ageing!
Beauty treatment masks should be a staple of any skin care regime. More and more options are flooding the UK market for any and every skin type. Anyone can benefit from a weekly mask and now there are plenty to choose from to suit your specific needs. People who use masks already get to see the benefits daily, and we’re excited that the beauty industry is creating even more choice!
There’s an app for just about anything, and now there are even apps for looking after your skin! Tutorials and skin analyzers are available to download to your mobile device, offering tips and tricks of the trade. But be mindful - some of the apps are marketing tools created by the big skin care brands to encourage you to buy their products. Try looking for free, impartial apps that aren’t attached to a brand.
