Stress Awareness Month - Simple Tips for Managing Stress

Tuesday, 1 April 2025

April is Stress Awareness Month, a time to reflect on how stress can impact our daily lives and ways in which we can manage it.

At Holmer Park, we believe that taking care of your mind and body is absolutely essential, as when you feel good inside, everything else just seems to fall into place that little bit easier! We've all felt that familiar tension and buzz of worry, so wanted to share some simple tips to help you manage stress.

Just Breathe

Sounds simple, right? But just a few minutes of deep, mindful breathing, or trying a guided meditation, can really calm things down. It's about being present in the moment, letting go of the “what ifs” and focusing on the “right now.” It's simple, but surprisingly effective!

Connect and Chat

Support plays a crucial role in stress management - after all, humans are social creatures! Chatting with friends, joining one of our group exercise classes, or just having a good old natter over a cuppa can make a huge difference. We're a friendly bunch here at Holmer Park, so don't be afraid to say hello to staff or other health club members!

Try To Improve Your Sleep

Easier said than done, but quality sleep is essential for managing stress. If you haven't already, try creating a relaxing bedtime routine by avoiding screens before bed, enjoying a warm bath, or sipping a calming herbal tea. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night to help your body recover and recharge. If you can't sleep, even just spending some quiet hours resting can make a world of difference.

Fuel Your Body, Fuel Your Mind

It's true that what we eat affects how we feel. A diet rich in whole foods, fresh fruit, vegetables, and plenty of hydration can provide the energy and nutrients our bodies needs to cope with stress more effectively. Try planning your meals and snacks ahead of the day, to take away the urge to grab something quickly - it also frees up a task from your mental queue for the day!

Get Moving, The Power Of Exercise

We often talk about how exercise is good for us, but did you know it's also a fantastic stress reliever? This is because exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood boosters, and these help to clear your head. Why not try one of our relaxing yoga classes or a refreshing swim in our pool? If you're lacking the time, even a gentle walk can make a world of difference to your day - especially if you're somewhere surrounded by beautiful nature.

Say "No" and Set Boundaries: Protecting Your Peace

Sometimes, stress comes from taking on too much. It's okay to say “no" and establish boundaries that protect your time and energy. Whether it's work-related or personal commitments, prioritising what truly matters can help alleviate unnecessary stress.
